Goose I

Goose I was originally an Estes ‘Mongoose’ model rocket. This is a two-stage B/C size rocket. Stock, it can hit up to 1800 ft in altitude with a C6-0 and C6-5 engine.

I have taken a second set and gutted it to create a three stage C-powered rocket. I have also incorporated a pen camera in a viewport near the nose-cone

On November 15, 2009, Goose I completed its first test flight at Monroe Elementary. The rocket was loaded with a single B6-5 engine as well as the pen camera. Once the video is edited I will post it here.

On January 24, 2010, Goose I made its maiden voyage out at the Great Salt Lake near Saltair. Unfortunately, the rocket drifted horizontal shortly after the launch and traveled at least 1500 feet towards the lake. The rocket, boosters and camera were lost to the bog near the south end of the lake. Oh well!

I believe the horizontal shift during the flight was due to a misalignment in the fuselage. The main body of the rocket was likely not perfectly aligned with the 3rd booster, however we will never know for certain.

Planning for Goose II is already begun. Improvements will be made in the construction to ensure the (suspected) flaws are worked out. I am also looking into a new venue as the Great Salt Lake is not so ideal. I’m thinking possibly Sugarhouse Park or maybe even the Bonneville Salt Flats. If you have any suggestions, please comment!
